Cameras for Separation Anxiety Training

Separation anxiety training requires the use of webcams so dogs can be watched during absences.  A common question we frequently get asked is how to choose a camera.  Because there are so many options to choose from it can feel overwhelming for some dog owners to pick the right camera. Rather than giving a list based on our favorite make and models, we’ve broken down cameras according to our favorite features:

Cost

Webcams have a wide price spectrum. Budget webcams can be found for as little as $30.  Higher end models sell for around $200.  If you live in a home with many rooms cost may be a factor because we recommend having one camera per room so that the dog is always in view.

Panoramic View

Dogs move around during the day. Having a camera with a panoramic view allows guardians to keep an on eye their dog no matter where they move.  Bonus points for zooming/night view capabilities!

Recording Options

Most webcams allow recording for video playback. Some limit videos to 15-second of replay.  Others allow for longer recordings with SIM cards. Recording comes in handy when working with a separation anxiety trainer because it allows trainers to review a dog’s body language even if they aren’t attending a live training session. It also allows for videos to be played back in slow-motion so nuances in body language are easier to identify.

Ability to Talk to the Dog

This isn’t a necessary feature for with dogs going through separation anxiety training.  It can be confusing and upsetting for dogs to hear their guardian’s voice without being able to find them.

Treat Tossing

We do not recommend this feature.  Separation anxiety training is the one time we don’t use treats to reinforce training.  Some dogs won’t eat when left alone because they are too scared. Other dogs will eat, but as soon as the food is gone they are left panicking.
